Audio for a short film?

I'll be shooting a short film in a few months and need to find some nice audio equipment, but not too expensive. The scenes will mostly be inside and shot at a pretty close range: 5 - 15 feet. I was thinking of getting a shotgun mic, would it work? Thanks.

are you talking about mounting the shotgun on your camera, and therefore having your mic 5-15ft away? That will *work* but its really far from ideal. A good external mic will improve your sound over the onboard sound. Mounting that external mic on a boompole and getting it as close to out of frame as possible directly pointed at the talent's mouth will make your audio fantastic though. I'd take a cheap mic on a pole over an expensive one mounted on camera any day. As far as nice, but not too expensive, check out the stickies in this forum. There are several good audio packages outlined from cheap to not so cheap. Also look into what type of pickup pattern will be best suited for what you are shooting. Generally speaking, a hypercardioid will fare better indoors and a shotgun better outdoors. Also look into proper wind protection, shock mounting, cabling etc. Having the mic on a boom makes a world of difference though. Dont expect much from a camera mounted mic. And dont forget to add some nice headphones to your audio package. Got to be able to hear what you are micing. Sony 7506's are great and affordable, although every once in a while someone mentions another brand/model that works well for them. And do some searching and thinking about whether you need a mixer for what you are doing.

It's better to have it on a boom because of the Octava is so sensitive that it may pickup the Camera's motor.
