Audio for a Rock Show

I'm shooting a rock show tomorrow for a friend of mine from work (it'll be about 30 min. long).

Tell me your take on this - I've got my DVX, PV-DV852 palmcorder, 2 XLR cables (20 and 50), AT3031, and my NTG-2.

Wanted to set up my 852 as a cutaway, and handle the DVX getting various angles, etc.

As for audio - what would you do?

I was thinking either running a line from the mixer to the DVX (but then I'll have a wire following me in a location I'm not too familar with) And get audience reaction from the palmcorder (won't be great, but'll be there)

Or (crazy thought) just screw it and put the 3031 on a shockmount on my camera?

Of course I wouldn't have this problem if I had an XLR adapter. - But that's the beauty of this challenge! What would you do? Thanks!

i would run a feed from the mixer into a double system recorder - like a minidisc, or HD recorder, or even a laptop., trying to record as many SEPARATE mixer feeds as possible. Id then use a mic on the cameras to get atmos, and crowd reaction, and mix the feed and the mics together for whatever effect you want. No second recorder? Get someone to help you with bashing the cable, and send the feed to your cam by cable.

Unless you want a very rough and ready feel to the filming, id aim for a mixer feed.

thanks

thanks

I do not have a second recorder, but I'm gonna get my brother to handle the wire from the mixer and use my internal mic.

I'd like to set up the cardiod on a mic stand for ambient, but it's just too much trouble with such a short time to set up.

Thanks for the reply!

dont bother with a mic stand - rock shows are so loud and in your face, that an on cam mic for atmos will probably be a bit better because at least the sound you hear will be slightly linked to picture - like a fan screaming or something: you'll hear it with the right perspective.

plus any handling noise is completely drowned out in loud environments like that.

good luck.

You may also ask to have the mixer guy make you a DAT tape from his board if you don't have a secondary recording device.
