audio for a doc

hey everyone im getting ready to start work on my first documentary, and was wondering what would be the best way to capture nice clear audio. my friends recomened a dat recoreder. would this b worth further research or are there any better ways?

If you are shooting with a video camera that records 48k 16bit audo then you'd be better off spending that money on a decent mic and mixer set up and record straight to camera otherwise you have to be very meticulous about logging all your sound bites for syncing up later with the picture. The best advice I can give is to hire an audio pro with good equipment.
