Audio field mixer question: SD 302 or MixPre for Panasonic AF100???

I just received my Panasonic AF100 and plan to do a number of one on one in door talking head interviews using a boomed Schoeps MK41 mic with my AF100. But I was told that to get really good clean sounding audio, a field mixer is essential.

Aside a third XLR input, how is the Sound Devices 302 better than the Mixpre or the Eng 44?

Does the 302 enable me to get cleaner audio than the Mixpre?

Thanks very much in advance for any help / advice.

My suggestion would be to visit the Sound Devices website and look over the specs and features of the mix pre and 302 and decide for yourself which would be a better business purchase, as it would be hard for anyone other than you to know what other audio needs you will have past this one job.

As an aside, I own the 302.

All the Best!

Ok will do. But can you tell me why you bought the 302 instead of the Mixpre. Since it is roughly twice the price, I imagine you had some very good reasons. Was it because you needed more than two channels or are there other things that make the 302 essential for you?

Better metering, better monitoring, variable impedance outputs, multiple outputs, multiple select HP filters, M/S option, variable select limiters on all inputs and outputs, 3 channels, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Of course features that I need my not be features that you need. Which is why I suggested visiting their site for full specs.
Also when using that 641 mic you will want to include the cut 1 module, or have a mixer with a good HP filter.

Good Luck!

In terms of audio quality, they are both pretty much the same. I believe they both use the same pic pre's.
