Audio equip. on a budget

I'm looking for advice on some good audio equip. on a budget.

I'm mainly doing interviews and auto reviews, and was wondering whether a shotgun or a good lavalier system would work better for me.

I check ebay and they have a few deals where you could get both mic types for about 400-500$. Your advice is appreciated.

I can just see it now. Matt is all zoinked from staying up all night in the virtual chatroom that this message board became and someone asks an audio question and he's drooling with anticipation (like a zombie) to get an answer knocked out.

I can save him the trouble, you can get the mics for under $500 (897 & Countryman), but then you will need to spend money on a boom pole, shockmount, softie, blimp (if you're working outside), and cables.

The best piece of advice, either start with more money, or piece your system together. If you are doing primarily interviews, start with a lav mic. Then as you save money get the 897 (I only recommend this because of your budget, obviously the 4073a is a better mic).

At that point you are ready to move forward.

Then again, wait for Matt to post, he's normally right on the money, but beware, he will talk you into buying a mic through subliminal suggestions that he is curious about, but it will end up being the best decision you will ever make.

hi Mat, sorry for the belated reply, here's the info you asked about. The interviews will be mostly indoors, I've got a DVX100a and output will end up on the net.
As I am on a budget I was also considering using the same mic for "Auto" reviews. You know talking about cars while driving, etc.
Should I be looking into a lav (wireless, maybe) and what's the best one I can get on a budget? Thanks
