Audio dropouts...

My DVX has, on occasion, had very short audio dropouts while shooting. These dropouts are very short, maybe 3 or 4 frames, and while they are quite infrequent, I'm not sure what to think. The picture quality is fine, but the audio simply drops off and then comes right back in, and I can't hear it while rolling so I don't discover this until back in the edit room.

Has anyone had this happen? Should I run a head cleaner through it? I'm not sure this warrants an expensive professional head-cleaning, but it certainly worries me. I guess shooting two takes of everything is crucial.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrew

This happens with DV.

Don't re-use miniDV tapes.

If you were recording via DVCAM (tape spins faster) then you would have less drop outs like that.

Had a similar event a while ago and cleaned the heads with no fix. I asked several places as to whether the DVX recorded audio using a different head and did not ever get a definitive answer so I cleaned what looked to me like audio heads and the problem left town.

My camera has 323 hours. Is it worth considering buying a new camera? i could give this one a tune up and sell it. I've heard of DVXs lasting far longer than this, but I'm not sure what to do. I need my camera on a regular basis for work and can't afford a non-trustworthy camera.

300 hours is nothing. You can probably go past 1,000 hours with the DVX. Panasonic makes good DV mechanisms.
