Audio Distortion

Hello

So I taped a band with an HVX 200, thinking the on-camera mic would be good enough. I turned down the audio levels and could see that the levels were barely hitting red on the left, and for safety, on the right, I set them lower so it wasnt even hitting red.

when I listened to the results, there was still distortion.

Is this only due to the low quality on-camera mic? If I plugged in a nice shotgun and used that (next time I tape a band), I shouldn't get this distortion, correct?

thanks for any help..

You can get distortion from a $5000 mic if you don't listen to what you are recording.

If the room was loud enough it could have been distorting at the mic (no clue what the SPL of the on-camera mic is) or perhaps the preamp.

We just had a thread on recording concerts into camera this past week; check it out.

Cheers

Hi,

dont know the cam, but nearly all of them have audio limiters to prevent clipping (except you deactivated it).
Making the membrane of a good mic distorting the sound needs really high volumes (a jet plane for example).

Was the camera in a static position or moving while recording?
Did the band play over a PA or just instruments?
For best results you need to set up the mic(s) in static position(s)
The distance to sound source plays a big role and if you move mics you will always hear that.
