Audio - Dat vs. Mike connected to Camera

Hi,
I just had a conversation with a filmmaker (35mm) who was ASTONISHED that I was going to hook up my microphone to a camera rather than use a DAT recorder for a film feature I'm about to do. He thought the DAT would give me, camera operator, more mobility as well as produce better sound for the picture. Just wondering if you think he's right.

Second question - using one or two mikes, would you suggest using a mixer for this shoot?

Your thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks.

Re: Audio - Dat vs. Mike connected to Camera

it all depends on what you are shooting. I think the qulity of teh dvx audio is awesome.. I use it alot when shooting documentaries or just trying to capture one or even two sources of audio. The great thing is that you can set the dvx to record two different channels of audio on seperate tracks. This way when u import your audio into an iditing program you have two seprate mono tracks and not one stereo track. I've filmed lots of live shows for bands. When recently shooting for an acoustic duo i set up one shotgun mic that picked up the guitars and another shotgun mic that picked up vocals. I was able to import the the audio in through vegas and then edit each audio track indivdually in cool edit pro.

Useing an ADAT will give you a better sound quality but can cost a lot more money. I just picked up a used alesis for 235.00 off ebay and now need to buy the sound card in order to get it into my computer. The only thing i really use the ADAT for is when im recording a live show for a full band. The ADAT allows you to record each track seperatly so when you edit you get almost a perfect mix. If the drums are too hot you can turn them down, if the vocals are too shoft you can boost them up and the best part is being able to mic the crowd and mix them in at appropiate times. So it really all depends on what you are looking for.... Good luck hope this helped....

Re: Audio - Dat vs. Mike connected to Camera

he is right about mobility , for the sound it self the dvx can use very good recording device espesially if you running your mikes threu good premp or mixer
the most segnican point is what do you do to make your sound useble ?
the mike and the recorder wouldnt bring a thing if you dont preper the places where you shoot , acustic , noise or even problematic clothes on your actors , thos things much more influunce on your sound then what kind of recorder do you use ,

befor you deside where do you running your sound deside who would be do it for you , thats the first stage to go , then you might check if you have or have not any benifit to run double system
sound is not about recorder is how you control you invierment
even you working with one mike only be sure that you working thrue better amplifing stage then the camera preamps
dont forget the booman -this is THE MOST important tool in your soundman arsenal
