Audio cutting out in PP2.0

Occasionally, when I'm editing and watching part of it the audio will cut off. Pausing and starting again fixes it, but it usually only works for a few seconds before it cuts out again. This happens sporadically and nothing I've done so far has been able to stop it once its started, short of restarting the program. Any insight?
 
It's because your system can't handle the video and audio stream at the same time. Either upgrade the computer or set your preview quality to Low.
 
What would I need to upgrade on my computer? I've only got 1 GB of ram at the moment and I'm planning on upgrading to 2, but do I need a new graphics or sound card?
 
Probably the CPU would matter the most. RAM I would recommend 2GB minimum. Don't waste your money on a soundcard.
 
Well I don't think I'm going to be able to upgrade my CPU any time soon, but I'll put more ram on my list of priorities.

On an unrelated note, is it at all possible to keep footage that's in active use on an external HD? Or would it just be too slow?
 
Any other thoughts on this. I have a pretty beefy desktop with an Intel Duo Quad processor, 8GB of ram and a Raid 0 configuration, and I am getting this more often than I would like.

It even happens in the source monitor sometimes.
