Audio crackle?

I used my Azden SGM-1X on a boom with my DVX100 for the first time today and noticed that I got some static when my mic was shaken. I thought was the mic at first, but it worked fine on another camera. I then assumed that it must be that the DVX sensitivity was too high, and turned the gain to -50dB. I believe this helped- I assume I am probably just getting distortion from peaking audio? But it just seems a little "too" sensitive to bumps.

(Note: the connection is fine, I tried different XLR cables)

Re: Audio crackle?

I have had to replace many boom men after I literally ripped their head off for shaking the boom or dropping the butt-end on the floor. ;)

You will get loud blow outs, pops, and other noises when the boom is mishandled. It is not meant to be shaken. You didn't mention a shock mount, are you using one?

A damaged mic or wire will make a distinctive electronic crackle and pop.

Re: Audio crackle?

Thanks.
Though when I use the same mic with another camera, it sounds fine- even when shaken... violently.

Is the DVX somehow more sensitive? I mean, the audio peaks, but its an electric sounding crackle- totally unnatural, like there is a loose connection, but it is not loose.

Let me know.

Re: Audio crackle?

Are you using manual levels with both cameras? Are you using same headphones and cables?

It could be some wiring. Try another mic with both cameras to narrow down where the noise is coming from.

Good luck

Re: Audio crackle?

i would plug in everything then put your headphones on and start at the mic connections. wiggle them and work your way back to the camera .

Best of luck.

Re: Audio crackle?

Thanks guys. Well- it only happpens when I shake the actual mic, none of the cable connections seem to do anything. It also only happens when I shake the mic forward and backward, not back and forth. Is it inherent to the mic? I have yet to test another mic, but I will have one soon.

I ran in to the same problem yesterday too. I had a new MK12 and an older ME66, two different boom poles with two different shock mounts, and three different XLR cables. Both inputs on the DVX with any combination of equipment would produce a really nasty crackle when the mic was shaken.

I believe it only happened when the audio was clipping, but it seemed to clip extremely easily. No boom operator would have been able to keep the mic still enough to avoid the crackles. We ended up putting the mic in a C-stand, because it was the only thing that would keep it stable enough.

Our audio levels were great throughout, so I didn't want to drop the levels down to avoid the crackle.

Is that how the DVX100a typically deals with audio clipping, with a static sounding crackle?
