Audio Cracking/Distortion

Try the "Clip Restoration" filter, which is under "Noise Reduction." It removes the clipping that occurs when your sound is recorded in the red.

Well, Clip Restoration doesn't "fix" clipping but it makes the clipping less harsh. Essentially it rounds off the top of the clipped audio. It will still sound horrible but it might make your ears hurt less. :) It might mask it altogether if the clipping is extremely subtle.

Good luck

In Audition? Try the above. There are some applications that go beyond rounding the clipped audio and actually try to recreate what got lost. I have heard some remarkable results but none of these things are "the fix". You have to work at it and when all is said and done they are only guessing at what you lost. But they may make you audio salvageable. The only affordable one I know of is by iZotope and called RX

Until 10-31-07 it's selling at $199, then it goes up up $349.
If $199 seems steep then you don't do much sound work and I would suggest you take your files to someone who does and for whom it's more cost effective to drop a couple of hundred on noise reduction. A Cedar box will also probably do a good job but they start at $5,000 and go WAY up from there.
