audio compression during recording

Does anyone know if there's a way to use the default track effects during recording?

I want to compress the levels I'm recordind to prevent peaking, but can't find any documentation on the subject.
Do I have to use a hardware compressor inserted in the signal?

Re: audio compression during recording

The recording can utilize compression, but you're always recording "dry" audio. You need to record clean on input whether you use a compressor or not. But you can monitor with the compressor inline.
You'll need an ASIO capable sound card.
Click the record device button, then choose Input Monitor from that submenu.
If Auto is selected, you'll hear audio whenever playback or record are engaged.
