Audio Commentary

I search before I started this topic and I found nothing on this subject.

Does DVDA 3 give you an option to do a Directors Commentary? If so how do you turn the commentary off/on like the Pro DVD's.

Have any of you guys done commentaries? How do you do it. Originally I was going to just record my voice in the vegas timeline along with the film then import everything as one file into DVDA, but it would save so much space on my dvd if I just included the Audio commentary rather than the whole movie along with the commentary..

I'd appreciate any tips/advice.. thanks.

I personally hate the fact that I have to watch the entire film all over again just to hear the commentary. The few times that I did commentary I would simply record myself and include that as a separate video files.

You can add a second audio track in the timeline window of DVDA, simply drag and drop. Upon playback in the preview window press the Audio button on the remote and choose which track you want to hear. The two tracks are not blended together, they are exclusive. AFAIK, If you want to hear your movie underneath your commentary you'll have to mix down a track from both and use that as your inserted second track in the DVDA track window. Hope this makes sense...I know how to do it but have never had need for alternate audio on my projects so I'm a little rusty.

My pleasure. One of the few times I've been able to actually help on these boards instead of just lurking around for information!

And if you want a button for in in a menu, for users who don't know how to switch audio tracks on their DVD player, inset a new button and just set the video stream for your movie, and the audio stream as your second, commentary, track.

Hey Mister Cat, don't feel bad, look at me, I'm at 300 post, and not one of those post ever helped anybody I think.. I rather give people correct info then just guess.. anyway thanks,

Bennishahn, I will try what you said, though I admit.. I'll go nutz figuring out how to do it, thanks fellas.

Ok. BennisHahn, I spent the whole night trying to fugure this out, no luck, I'm able to add a second audio track to the timeline of the film, but how do I set it up for the audience to choose to have the Commentary off/on?

I'd appreciate a step by step run down... thanks

I will take it from the top (I know you said you got the first part).

1) Insert your movie file. It has a Video stream and an Audio stream (defined as "stream 1")

Here we have our movie inserted into a single menu DVD. These are the two streams of media.

2) Our first step is to insert our audio commentary track. It needs to be a separate .wav file or .ac3 file. You do not need a separate .avi or .mpg file. Click and drag from the explorer to under your movie streams.

3) Now we need a button to turn the audio commentary track on and off. I am going to put it on the same menu for simplicity, but the process is exactly the same if you want it on a separate menu.

4) Set the command for 'link' and set 'destination' as your movie file (in the drop down list). This tells the button to play your media file as it is. We don't want that. We want the commentary track to play. There is another drop down list that is labeled "set audio stream". This is what we need to change. The default is "stream1". Stream 1 refers to the movie's audio track it was imported with. Our audio commentary track we inserted under it is "stream 2". Change the drop down box to "2".

There you go! That button will toggle on the commentary track for your movie. Chapters you have set using markers will still work using this method, so navigation is easy.

If you want to have an "off" button, all you need to do is repeat steps 3 and 4 with a small change. Keep the audio stream in step 4 set to "1" or "no change". This will play the movie with the audio track originally imported.

Hope this helps!
