What are the advantages of using the bus for Audio. I have never used it, and would like to know what it could be used for?

SInce we are on the topic - I have a project with two busses, A and B, both routed out to the master mixer, but I can only hear the tracks that are routed to B bus. When I route it to A, I can't hear it. A bus is not muted or anything...
Any ideas?
P.S. I thought of having dialog on bus A, and the ambient sound (plus maybe music tracks) on bus B. It's a Dolby 5.1 project...
