Audio BLOWN??? (int + ext)

[FONT=&quot]We recently rented a camera out to a student and when he brought it back we cannot get any audio from the internal or an external mic. If we turn the gain all the way up and snap our fingers we can get a pop sound. All settings are correct.
My question is what could blow the audio off the camera like that?

Dropping it, maybe? Or the mic-pre's all going bad from again, dropping, electrical fault, etc. How sure are you you can't get any audio level off of it?

Is the speaker/headphone volume turned up?
Are the switches inside the LCD set to Internal Mic?
Are the switches under the lens for input 1 & 2 set to Mic (and not Line) ?
Do you have the audio meters set to visible on the LCD?
