Attaching my 23 inch Apple display to my macbook pro: problem

My 23 isn't the super old one, it looks like the more current apple displays. from 2006.

I went out and got a Mini Display port to DVI adapter. I was told the other 2 ends coming from the monitor were not needed (a usb and something else) and by attaching the adapter to the monitor and plugging it into the macbook pro, all would be well.

I did so, and the mac book screen flashed and then came back, so I know it registered something, but not I can't make the 23 inch turn on or do anything.
what am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

It's letting my mouse go off the side of the monitor, as if it is going onto the other screen... the screen just isn't powering on. There is a power button, which I have pressed, but nothing. Seems like a screen this big wwould need it's own power source, but there is no power plug coming off of it, and I dont think it was ever plugged into a power source on my old g5.

durrrrr. I feel dumb. It was a cable I had in my old tower pile that was needed for the screen. all is well.

No need to feel dumb.

Just remember when you have a problem with something, always check the simple things first.
