Attaching Fluid Head to Geared-Column Tripod

I have this cheap tripod with a geared column. The head attaches by clamping onto the column with a tightening screw (a typical cheap tripod connection). I'm wondering what that type of connection is called and if there is a fluid head that mounts that way... or even a way to adapt a fluid head onto that kind of post. I know I need to get a good set of legs to put under a good head, but I can only buy one at a time right now and I'm only shooting really simple pans.

I bought a Manfrotto fluid head for my cheap tripod legs. The bottom of the head was 3/8" which i used an adapter to go to 1/4", which my tripod legs had. 1/4" is the standard for most cameras and mounting plates. You may have to create a DIY adapter between the two.
