Atomos Ninja firmware problems

Hello everyone !

Sorry if I open this thread on the wrong forum because I am having some issues with mu account or simply I still din't get the hang of the forum just yet.
Anyway, here is my little problem !

I have recently bought an Atomos Ninja from B&H. When I got the unit I didn't have any HD to properly try the unit apart from turning on and going through the menus.
IT looked OK and I even managed to check in which firmware it was running. As far as I can remember it was the latest firmware or at least was 2.02. I think.
Since I didn't have HD to try it on with my Panasonic Af 101 I took the batteries out and put it back on the box until I bought a WD scorpion black spinning disc.
When I got the disc yesterday I took the Ninja out to try it on. When I turned it on few seconds it gave me the warning : Firmware upgrade failed please insert hard drive with valid firmware". V 1.0.
by this time I didn't put the HD on the Ninja. I turned the unit off and back on again i still got the same message.
I went on Atomos website and downloaded the new firmware 2.03. I followed the instruction in upgrading the firmware and still get the same message.

I find it very strange as to how the unit reset it self without using it. Does any one know what format should the HD be formatted before using with Atomos?
I friend of mine has the Samurai on, can I use his one to format my HD and try and update the firmware again?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
All the best
Valon

According to the manual, Ninja can be reset by holding down the on/off switch for 10 seconds. The entire procedure is here:
http://www.atomos.com/ninja/firmware/recovery.xml

The file format is FAT32. If you format the drive outside of Ninja, use FAT32. I received my Ninja from B&H two days ago. I had an SSD ready to go, but didn't have the firmware on the drive. So I got the same message you did. I didn't have to reset the Ninja, just downloaded and copied the firmware to the SSD, and it worked. It takes several minutes for Ninja to process the firmware.

Hi from Croatia. My Ninja arrived last week from B&H photo too and has similar issue. After I unboxed Ninja I first upgraded firmware to 2.03 using brand new Scorpio black 500g which is suggested on Atomos website. It records flawlessly but when I press PLAY I have black screen for about 30 sec and then massage same as you: firmware upgrade..... Then I have to turn off Ninja and and turn it on again and enter Ninja info from Home menu and there is fw 2.03.If I press PLAY again everything goes wrong again.Only sometimes (2 of 15)it plays scenes correctly. If I plug HDD into caddy I can see all of clips I recorded so there they are.Sent a massage to Atomos but they told me to contact B&H photo, like they know.Tomorrow I will try some other HDD not Scorpio black because it is only common in both Ninjas, yours and mine.
