Atomos Ninja 2 Production Issues

Hi All,

Please be aware that as Atomos has changed their production line it seems that the first batch out has some errors. Being an owner of the original Ninja 2, I ordered a second one and received it last week, the first batch off the new line. The display has serious issues - color streaks covering the whole screen and no intelligible information was visible so it was completely inoperable.

Sent that unit back and ordered another one from a different vendor, only to find that it also has a serious display issue. This one is at least usable, but the screen is extremely dim on the right half of the screen, however I can make it work and will have to as we are just days away from a major production.

Just wanted to make everybody aware of this issue as it seems to be not just a one-off but perhaps an entire batch of faulty screens as these two units came from separate vendors. Make sure to watch out and plan for this if you, like us, are planning on putting them into service right away.

Other than that, the other changes to the new Ninja 2 are that it comes with just one battery, a redesigned single-position charger, a new car-charger (which is nice), and it comes with a redesigned SSD reader, which is a step-down from the older unit which is still offered as a stand-alone purchase. Obviously some cuts had to be made to get the price lower. I also noticed that there are some changes to the unit itself - such as the headphone jacks are now black plastic as opposed to the metal of the previous Ninja 2's.

I will try to keep this updated - for now I am keeping the unit with the barely-usable screen as I need it for the production, and will be working with the vendor to get a replacement unit that works properly. I will also try to do a comparison between the new and old unit once I receive a working unit. Thanks!

This is the second (better) Ninja. At least this one is usable. I didn't get a shot of the other one as I didn't realize it was more than a one unit issue at that point.

Sorry about the trouble, and bad timing for them to show up!
Hopefully it's just a (small) batch (I'm trying to re-assure myself).
I ordered mine from dvestore.com and it's in transit right now.

Please don't get offended, but I suppose you tried them on different cameras and also with different cables...

I have seen that issue happen before where a faulty hdmi cable or camera can cause weird screen issues. But these are not plugged into anything when they are doing this, so its not a bad cable or anything. Also, my other Ninja 2 (the older version) does not have any of these issues.

Just wanted to update that finally today I received a replacement unit, as they had been out of stock for a while. The new unit, my third of the new generation Ninja 2's, works perfectly. So it appears that whatever issues there were with the first run have been corrected.

Not sure how widespread this issue was, but given that I received two faulty units from two different vendors, I would bet that it may have been significant. Also given that the units were out of stock for a while, Atomos may have recognized and fixed the issue in that time.

Good news is that going forward it looks like the units shipping now are just fine. In fact, I've noticed a minor improvement in color accuracy compared to the original Ninja 2.
