It's a Samurai on Steroids.

"The Ronin portable Recorder/Player/Monitor is a smart solution for both fixed-facility and on-location video production. Based on the award-winning Samurai field recorder, the Ronin features touchscreen ease of use, capture to Apple ProRes® or Avid DNxHD◊, professional monitoring and edit review. Like the Samurai, it can operate on location with battery or DC power, but it can be used in a fixed facility, rack-mounted environment using AC power.

In addition, the Ronin has balanced XLR inputs and outputs, along with a front panel headphone jack with channel monitoring selections. It also has an internal battery charging system for attached Atomos batteries when connected to AC power."

Very interesting, looks like Atomos' answer to the PIX240. Which is just about my favourite tool that I own (because having high-quality sound synced with your video from the outset - makes life in post so much less painful).

Great price too.

I like the XLR inputs like the PIX unit but am a bit disappointed that they did not add HDMI I/O interally since the unit is so much larger than most. If you want to use it with a non-SDI camera you would need their adapter which is another thing to hang off the unit. The price of the HDMI brings the unit pretty close to the PIX which has Sound Devices audio...

Ronin means a samurai without a master. Not a very inspired name for a tech product.

In cinema history, ronin are often more interesting, invincible, more powerful, more creative, and less dogmatic because they're less restricted and bound by conventions and traditions. Hence they're superior samurai. check out Toshiro Mifune's sumarai characters, e.g. Yojimbo.

I don't get it ... take a Samurai, add XLRs, and it's 5 times bulkier and over 4 times heavier....??? I don't see the rationale here, unless it's really just aiming at the rack-mount market.

Which camera will output that format over 1 SDI connection?

The FS700: http://www.xdcam-user.com/2012/06/uncompressed-slow-mo/

And what are you planning to do with that footage once you have it in that format?

Slo-mo springs to mind, whether just recording 60p, or using the FS700's super-slow-mo. Or maybe you just want 60p.

I gotta say, I'm disappointed that it really does seem to have the same specs as the Samurai, apart from the audio.

3G-SDI, not HD-SDI, like the Ronin's connection.

Right... so the question is, with such a "big" upgrade, why is it still HD-SDI.

Why do you want "just 60p"? Where will you show it?

Ask James Cameron... ;-) OK, for me, slow-mo would be the use case here. But again, I'm not really talking about what I want; I'm just wondering how Atomos are justifying this new product. Yes, audio is good, and yes, it's now on a par with the PIX-240, feature-wise. But they'e blown away any pretense of portability, so the PIX is still the very clear winner for me.

In Japan, samurais who lost a master were supposed to commit suicide. Those who didn't suffered great shame and dishonour. Sometimes, when the ronins ran out of money they would sell their swords and buy fake ones made of bamboo to preserve their image.
Anyway, ronins had a pretty bad reputation and were viewed as dangerous and undesirable.

I don't anything about Japanese feudal society, so my comment doesn't go there. I know only samurai movies, and in many great samurai movies, ronin kick ass. Hence Ronin is a very appropriate name for the intent of this latest Atomos product, being a product marketed as a kick-ass movie product.
