Atomos has gone public

Supposedly they have a variety of former Blackmagic brainiacs working for them (for a few years now) so a camera is the next logical step.

[Jeromy Young used to work at BM.]

If there's anyone you want to make a camera or at least attempt to make one, it's them.

If there's anyone you want to make a camera or at least attempt to make one, it's them.

Theoretically, they would be in a position to make a camera without needing to cripple it to protect their higher end cameras, since they have none

i wonder if going public, will hold them accountable for public statements made on 'upcoming firmware updates' which on numerous models have never been delivered...

If you are a stock holder, especially if you own enough to vote, then yes.

And yes, I was going to mention the AJA camera, those people should have also been able to make a really good camera, not sure what happened there.

Anyone who owns a CION will actually tell you it's a pretty good camera, but the camera had too many things going against it.

First and foremost they were asking $9K for an unproven system with a PL mount (no one uses PL lenses besides the 1%) that also needed proprietary media and power.

This was shortly after the BMPC and FS7, which were destroying cameras left and right.

Then a combination of factors including shipping the camera with certain missing features, supposedly using a different sensor at the last minute (I don't know), and receiving a few unfavorable reviews from the "standard" sites and it was done.

The terrible reality for manufactures in this particular industry today is that they have to provide so much in a camera for so little for any worthwhile consideration, so it's difficult to survive. BMD makes cameras that may (and do) have various issues, but that doesn't mean they aren't great cameras...just won't get that QC everyone wants because there is not enough money for it.

Kraft was another promising camera but never made it passed the drawing board.

To me, having been an imaging pro for over three decades, it feels like we are already spoiled for choice, compared to even just five years ago.
So many great cameras for so little money. It's hard to believe there are still new camera companies coming to the table with new offerings.
Same with lenses. Never in my career, has so much super high resolution/high quality glass been available for so little (relative) money.
Theo downside of this as a camera geek is that it's hard to get excited about any new cameras now. I just bought the Fujifilm X-T3. It's so
impressive for so little money that it makes me NOT excited for the C300 MKIII or even my own C200 MKII when it comes out.

Having such great and capable tools like the X-T3 for a pittance leaves me to focus more on upping/growing my lighting/DP skills and
for refining and getting back to doing very high quality sound when shooting withouta sound mixer. And of course, hiring one of you talented
people to shoot my projects instead of doing it myself is the real goal. Producing is the key to transitioning from being a camera monkey to a
person who makes a decent living in my chosen field. I LOVE lighting and shooting and am decent at it. But there are so many people who are
not only decent at it, but REALLY, really great at it.

As I've been shooting my two current docs, I am beginning to see that I don't care which of the six camera ops we had plus myself shooting on some
of our bigger races actually got the shot, I just care if the shot helps me to craft the story I want to tell. Sad to say, but just like cameras and lenses,
we are spolied for choice with great DPs and camera ops out there. Drone ops too. It feels like trying to thrash your way to the top is a 20-30 something
pursuit. I am honestly not interested in trying to become a world class DP anymore, working for others to tell their stories.
It's much more gratifying to be the mind behind the story, writing, interviewing, working with the post team. I'll always shoot
on my own projects but I so want to turn over the DP reins to a great DP and collaborate rather than trying to do it all myself.
So bringing it back around to new cameras, hope Atomos makes something really cool and as good of a product as my Ninja Blade has been.

Odd. I dont think we are spoiled for choice at all, we have five cameras that are all equally useless and few zoom lenses that are useful.

Id love to see more cameras to market, but something in me says atomos would make another Coin.

I could go on and on about the Cion and the bad choices made. It was... unfortunate.

Unless someone can prove to me otherwise, the Craft camera was a scam. Took deposits based on some pretty renders and a list of just believable enough specs. But scratch the surface and there was nothing underneath.

Craft did refund people (I only know because a few users here and over at BMCuser mentioned they received their refund), so I don't think it was a scam.

They also issued a statement:

My opinion is they wanted to use the preorder money to continue the venture (like other companies do), but eventually realized they weren't in a position anymore to offer what they wanted to for the prices they initially thought.

The day after they announced they were folding up their tents, they took down the website and their emails were bouncing back. I had two deposits and never received a refund. I'm glad some other people did but from my perspective: scam.

I think Roma suffered from Alfonso Cuaron acting as his own DP. For a director it's necessary to have a basic technical understanding of all the various departments but to suddenly become your "own DP" is impractical, detracts from the direction it self, and his cinematography felt "insecure" to me with far too much camera movement for my taste/style. (qualification here....he's one of my favorite directors and I miss nothing he makes) but the style and how he moved the camera felt juvenile and fresh out of film school me. Anyway, though totally off topic, re drifting'S post I quoted, though good to slide in bebehind the camera if you're not getting the shot framed the way you want occasionally, the reason we get the incredible results from cameras like the Alexa is they are being used by proper sized crews, each with their own highly skilled specialty and in the end it's not the camera but the whole effort from everyone involved that results in what we see. (One man operations just ignore my rant here, but all the pixel peeping and this or that camera in the world is never going to change what it takes to produce a beautiful image on a film set!)

Oh, that's unfortunate! Did you ever pursue or follow-up?

One thing I do know for a fact is the website definitely wasn't down the next day (although I understand your comment may have been a figure of speech). I personally followed the site for a week or two after the announcement.

At the end of the day, error-prone humans are in charge of these tasks, so even getting a refund from your local 'Mom-and-Pop' shop may present a challenge for some.

Nevertheless, I can't argue with anyone who didn't receive their money back, but I do think that if hundreds or thousands of people were affected, you would have heard about it more (especially on the forums - news sites - YT).

?? So out of all of the cameras on the market, none of them please you as a useful tool? Dude, you are hard to please! ;-) Guess I am not very discerning but I am pretty thrilled and impressed with my new XT-3. Keep in mind I shoot mostly BTS and documentary type content, not commercials, features and music videos so I probably don't pixel peep as much as many DVXers. But so far, our clients are loving the images we are getting from the XT-3 and they have all liked the C200 footage over the past year, especially the CRL footage. As for me, I am spoiled for choice.
