AT897

Has anyone noticed that the AT897 has a static sounding crackle when used outdoors when it's windy? It's ruined some amazing things I had been working on at the time, and I'm wondering if anyone elses' does this? Other than those instances, it's performed wonderfully.

Should I buy one of those expensive windscreens?

yep.. im actualy building some blimp style windscreens right now... complete with zip on windjammer! i bought enough material to build about 20 of them for 10.00 cause i couldnt get the material in smaller quantities. but after initial testing everything points to it kicking butt :)

Re: AT897

IAL - are you planning on offering any of them for sale? I might be interested if it will work with my AT 897. ;D

Re: AT897

Hey IAL, will you be sharing details? I was wondering just the other day what it would take to make a homemade blimp or a wire mesh with a furry around it.

Re: AT897

oh! .. well, there would really be no point in me making one for anyone cause it would be cheaper to build 10 of your own than it would be for me to ship one probably.. at least any fast shipping anyway. but i can post a pic of the finished product, and let you know how its done though.(sides i dont have time to spend building more than my own..)
basically  i just went out and bought some galvanized wire mesh for like making a rabbit or gerbil fence/cage, or whatever its for.. the mesh is square holes about 1/3-1/2 of an inch or so, its very strong and sturdy, and holds its shape.. its not thin chicken wire or anything... and i bought some cheap plastic round containers. i cut a section out f the wire mesh, and made a cylinder, and cut the rim section out of the round containers to cap the cylynder on each end. i had bought some thin polyester batting which is for quilting (this material blocks wind well, but is very transparent for sound), and that gets wrapped around the wire mesh. then on top of that, i put a layer of black screen that you would put in a screen door or window. so i have a cylender that sound goes through but blocks wind with the screen, and polyester batting.  then for the end caps, (this is hilarious!) i used some wire mesh strainers, and of course layerd the batting and screen over them too. to hold the mic on the inside. the inner cage is strong enough to actually string rubber bands to to "X" the mic in there at a couple spots on the mic. but you could build  a better holder that the blimp slipps onto if you wanted. then of course the cord comes out wherever you make a hole, and
some "faux fur" was sewn up to make a zip on winjammer.. its not done yet,, but should be done possibly tonight.  works really well in all initial testing. and the nice part is that its modular, so i can take the windjammer off, and then slip off the wire screen, and slip off the batting, and replace it with any material i think will work better if i find some..or ever need some i guess.. it works well as is. and looks nice :)
