AT897 vs AT875, in need of quick help!

Hey guys, I am going to film a trip to Peru and get some interviews within a few weeks and I need a good shotgun mic. I will be using it a lot as an on camera mic seeing as I am the only film guy going. The 875 is supposed to be good for that, but I still want a good mic for long term use with interviews etc where I can use it as a boom mic.

Those are the two mics I am looking at, but feel free to recommend others as long as they are under $400.

Please give me some quick feedback.

PS. why the heck are zeppelins so expensive? Is there a decent softie for under $100 anywhere?

Thanks

ATs are good, but a little cold. The only way I would say to judge the two is to put them side by side on a mixer, and take a good listen. If you can find an old Sennheiser, go for it, and they are built too. As for fuzzys try micover, I think there slip on is like 35 clams. My K Tek that I have for my Sen was about 75 I think. Also you are not going to get good audio with an on camera shotgun for interviews. It just won't happen. The best is to get some sort lav mic, and use that. Shotguns really need to be as close as possible to get good signal. So if you are one man, try putting the boom on a stand. I don't know if you can do that on the field, but there must be someone in your group willing to boom for you.

Ahhh I wish, but it really is going to be me going around interviewing a bunch of people and officials by myself while everyone else works on projects. I have a lav, but it takes a little longer to set up, make it look ok, and make sure its not rubbing against shirts etc... maybe I can get a stand and cram it in my suitcase.

Found a Rode NTG2 for pretty cheap, might just pick that up, it comes with a free windscreen.

Sure, I am going down with a group to a small town called Reque which is near Lima. My friends Grandmother has been in ministry down there for 60 years, has a school named after her, and helped start a church. So I am doing a mini documentary about her life.
