at897 settings?

I'm using an at897 as a boom. I did some tests with it last night and it sounded good, but it seemed a little hot. I'm not a sound expert and I don't have any other shotgun mics to compare it to.

Can anyone recommend some good settings?
-50 or -60?

I was using -60 (Channel 2 stereo)

How high should I set the gain? Mine was at the default (about half or 90 degrees) when it sounded a little hot. Is it common to set the gain below half?

Re: at897 settings?

set the mike on -50 db  , place it about half miter over your head in  60 degris when the mike is pointing in the midle betwen your mouth and the midle of your chest  , open the pots until the picks woud hit the -6-8 dbfs mark , thats about secend red dot , for safty open the ALC on .
if you running both the chanel from the same mike decrise one of the chanels by 4-6 db  for unexpecting loud sounds (each dot is 2 db)

Re: at897 settings?

thats hard limmiter that starts about -4.5 dbfs
, you would find it in the rec settings

Re: at897 settings?

If there is a lot of hiss, then something is not set right. Are you running right into the camera, or using an external mixer?

Re: at897 settings?

Hmmmm.... I would recommend you put some sort of mixer in front of the camera. That might help, plus you will be using better mic pres than the cameras.

Re: at897 settings?

are you sure you running at normal level and not to low ,-let the picks hit at least 3rd red

Re: at897 settings?

whats normal level/low level? How do u adjust that? Sorry guys, I just got the camera on Tues and I'm trying to prep it for a short this Saturday.

Re: at897 settings?

A word of advice. Read the manual. If you can't figure this simple thing out, you're going to be in trouble on the shoot. I don't mean to sound like and @$$hole, but it's the truth.
