AT897 for use with Canon HF100

Hello and thanks for reading,

I'm looking for advice on how to get clean sound from a HF100 using an Audio Technica 897 shotgun mic.

I currently have this kit with the HF100

I've done a little testing so far, but I'm pretty new to sound in general. What I have so far is far from clean, and has a fair amount of hiss.

Would a beachtek adapter be the solution instead of the xlr to mini cable? Or is this going to essentially do the same thing?

Has anyone tried this combo? and if so what advice can you give?

Thanks so much:)

Joe

Small/consumer camcorders have noisy amplifiers. Using the XLR/mini cable adapter in the kit will have similar performance as using something like a Beachtek DXA-2S, since they are both passive adapters.

You can reduce the hiss by using a low-noise preamplifier. While recording fine audio detail, you let the preamp do the heavy-lifting, and throttle back the gain on the noisy camcorder amps. They cost about the same as the Beachtek. Check this out:
