at875 vs. at897

Hello,

I'm looking to pair the Audio Technica 875 or 897 with a Tascam dr100 mark II. It seems that the big difference between these two mics is that the 897 can run on battery and phantom power whereas the 875 is phantom power only. However, I've read that the 897 puts out a signal that is a tad low for hand held recorders. Thus the 875 (putting out a stronger signal) would be a better match.

Any thought on this?

Thanks!

I think the big difference is that they are two totally different designs with the 897 being more of a traditional electret/phase cancellation tube design and the 875R being pressure gradient.

Personally I really rate the 875R and think it is a very good general purpose mic as it does not give too much of the phaseyness of slotted longer shotguns and to my ears gives a very natural sound inside and out, it also has plenty of gain too and I now have five of them.

OK downside is that it is phantom power only but as all my cameras and mixers can provide that it is not a problem for me.
