At815b and Boom/Windscreen Help

Hello. We just bought a perfect condition used At815b for our project. Since our budget is almost zero we are now looking for an inexpensive solution for a boom and windscreen.

I have seen some suspension holders and booms made by individuals online before but can't find them. We are pretty good at making things from scratch but would like to follow a tried and tested idea if one exists.

As for the windscreen, can one be made successfully from quality fuzzy fabric? What are the potential issues with not using a pro-produced one?

Thanks for your help!!!

You could look at any commercial shock mount and get the general idea. If it were that easy however, there would be more of them on the market and they would be a lot less expensive. A shock mount has to filter out the low frequency mechanical vibrations transmitted up the pole from handling it. It also has to hold the uneven (front heavy) weight of the microphone & windscreen without sagging (over time), and it has to hold it steady enough to withstand the inertia of rapid movement without wiggling around. The 815b is a long, heavy mic with a windscreen on it. Which is worth more - $55.00 - $110.00 or many hours of trial and error plus materials to make your own?

Windscreens have to be acoustically transparent across the entire audio band. You'll have to find the cloth or fur and something to support it that will also block out 35 MPH wind gusts. If you don't do it right, your mic will sound muffled and you'll loose directivity.

For $370.00 you can get a high quality furry windscreen and a very effective shock mount and get right to work.
