AT803b module

hi
http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/attachm...search-at803b-replacement-capsule-at803b1.jpg

i was wondering what this module is all about.

Me, i would like to use the lavalier at803b in a sony hxr-nx30 camera plugged in xrl.

I just don't use the module ? and plug the xlr cable of the lavalier directly in the camera ?

Thanks in advance,
The lav itself doesn't have an XLR connector on its cable, it has a TA3F. The power module a) converts the cable to XLR and b) provides battery power to the mic if phantom isn't available. I'm not certain about this specific mic but it's rare that a lav capsule uses full 48v phantom so I imagine the module also reduces phantom to the lower voltage that mic actually uses when phantom power is available.

- Very rare.
Most lav elements themselves typically use low voltage bias current, (sometimes referred to as 'plug-in power') but folks have wired XLRs directly on em' just the same and applied 48 volts Phantom Pwr... a different animal, which will usually fry the mic and sometimes the device feeding the power.

100% ... I've never heard of a lav capsule that would use phantom directly. I used the word "rare" instead of "never" only because just 'cause I've never heard of something it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. :)

it says for xlr, the rode lavalier takes 48v phantom power no?
You're confusing the mic capsule with the mic system. The Rode uses 48v phantom only when it is connected though the MiCon-5 XLR adapter. The MiCon-5 contains components that reduce the 48 volt phantom power down to the 5 volts or so the mic capsule actually uses. Likewise the AT803b mic uses its power module to perform a similar function. In other words, the power module is part of the system and you have to use the whole package for the capsule to work properly.
