i've read here that the 4073a mic is pretty incredible for the price..but how much better is it really than the 897 ?

am i gonna get a lot more for spending a couple hundred bucks more?

also the 4073a is a longer mic..right? is it still mountable on the cam?

(my budget was around 300 but i won some $$ in poker the other day.)

At897 is 11 inches long and $280 Click HERE

At4073a is 9 inches long and $530 Click HERE

The 897 can run on battery or phantom power and the 4073a is phantom only. The 4073a will sound better, have more side and rear rejection, and a LOT more reach. It's a way more sensitive mic.

You'll never hear me say anything bad about the 897, but don't try to compare it to the 4073a.

The 897 is a starter mic... and it's even marketed that way. The 4073a is a SERIOUS mic with professional capabilities. You may never feel the urge to upgrade the 4073a... even after using $1K mics... I was honestly torn on getting the 416 over the 4073a... In my opinion the 4073a is reasonably close to the 416 in every respect but price...

So if you really can get the 4073a I would definitely do it. For an extra $20 you can get the kit B&H sells and you'll get an XLR and a crappy (but passable) shockmount.

In a situation like this I don't look at the whole price as much as I look at the difference. Even though you're looking at $280 or $530... I look at the 4073a as only being $250 more then the 897... because you're going to spend the $280 anyway... we're just talking about what you get for the difference... and what you get is a fully professional mic that was hundreds higher just a few years ago.

It's up to you, but the 4073a is a major league mic... you'll find times again and again where it pleasantly surprises you... a cheaper one will get the job done, but you wouldn't regret getting a really good mic... it's just one of those things that makes you smile every time you get it out of the bag.

Cut back the partying for a couple weeks... really what's a couple hundred bucks in your annual dv budget?

Re: AT4073a VS. AT897 .....

i really want the 4073 but $$ talks and i just paid rent..so i gotta go with the 897..the price is right!! im excited to get it.
i just ordered it from B&H.

i aim to get the 4073a next year..as i slowly build my arsenal of mics...
i also have an SM-58, a Sony ECM-66 lav, and a CAD E-200 (that's my baby for voice-over..and many other uses..etc)

buh-bye...and g'nite.
