Holy CHRIST. I just got it, and a friend of mine is loaning me his phantom power generator with noise reduction and eq.

IT IS INSANE.

I was really nervous after hearing the audio bytes from other mics, this thing is incredible. There is no tinniness, the audio is crisp and warm, side rejection is insane, and yet the pickup distance it has is crazy. I had my sennheiser phones on and was just pointing the mic around, and i'm like i think i h ear someone talking, i zero in on where its coming from, and am pointing it over the tops of my cube and i can hear a womans conversation 3 rows over, even with all my computer equipment on in my cube.

Oh lord I can't wait to play with this thing. I think I really made the right choice. If anyone wants sound examples PLEASE let me know, this thing is a joy!

I can't imagine what the super expensive mics must sound like!

You're not really far off base... from the really expensive ones. That's why I always recommend this same mic over and over... it's the cheapest shotgun that's worthy of calling "pro".

And you're finding out why right now. Welcome to the first step in majorly improved audio.

really? well i believe it. its crazy. i told my friend to come see how good the side rejection is.

he goes, whats side rejection?

I said here put on my phones. So he does. I turn on white zombie and point the mic at the speaker, he hears it perfectly. I slowly begin to turn the mic until its 180 degrees off axis. its still only 3-5 inches from the speaker, and it became barely audible.

he goes "WICKED!"

:D

I agree, this is a great mic for the money. If anyone is saving up for the ME66, they should really save up a bit more and get the AT4073A instead.

I'd like to get the AT4071 long shotgun with some kind of blimp system next.

Trew has an almost new 4071 w/ box and all accessories for $400 right now. CLICK HERE.

The ONLY reason I don't buy it is 'cause I have an AKG ULS system that's been kicking ass for me, I had a 416 before, and I have too many other things (like a Countryman B6) that I want to buy first! But a mic like that for over $200 off in basically new condition is hard to pass up!

Before the Sanken CS3e came along the 4071 was THE mic for sporting events and other situations where you wanted a max reach shotgun... (not including the MKH70... which is $1500)...

I couldn't agree more. The main reason I started stocking this mic at Coffey Sound is because of what people have been saying about it here, and I'm glad I have them now. It's the best short shotgun for under $1000.

I purchased an at4073a and it came today. I love the mic, but the case it came with is another story. The case is about double the size of the mic. Does anyone nowhere i can get a very small protective case for this mic?

I posted a clip with some examples of the at4073's ability in the screengrabs/clips section if you guys are interested :)

I work selling mics...Sennheiser, AT, Neumann and schoeps.
I agree the 4073A is a great mic....the 897 is good for general purpose but really the 4073 is the way to go (if you can).
I'm no sound guru but have worked as a freelance sound recordist on a couple tv series (in the past). If there's anything I've learned is there's no 1 mic for everything. In certain applications (sports for example) the ME66 actually works better than an MKH60...but admittedly not most of the time.
FWIW my 2cents,

Look for a normal object in Target or a sporting goods store that will cross over. I use the padded nylon lunch boxes for some of my sound gear... the things are totally insulated, virtually waterproof, and if you get a dark blue or black one they almost look like they were MEANT for your sound gear.

95% of the time I keep my shotgun in Softie and just leave it on... then that stays in a compartment of my PB bag... that's another approach.

about 300$!

zing!

No but seriously, without having the 897 I can only tell you my guess. Most likely its got a tinny sound assosciated with its pickup, and has worse side rejection.

If you watch my video in the screengrabs section you can see visually how the mic responds to being in frame/out of frame, as well as actually see the side rejection test to understand what it does audibly when you turn the mic off axis.

or i can link you directly:

I like my 897, but it is a little weak in the side-rejection area. Still a great mike for 300 beans though.

I think the 4073 sounds better (more natural). The 897 has a really low level output, which if you are plugging directly into a camera can be a bad thing, because your audio is more likely to be in the noise floor.
