What do you guys and gals think of this new mic from Audio Technica? I just saw it at the Video Expo in Burbank. 8)

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

The VideoMaker Expo was kind of lame. I just got back and was disappointed. Fewest vendors I've seen. DSE did speak on Vegas in the NLE panel which was interesting. But I walked through the entire expo in 10 mins and went for lunch. I did buy a car window mount from FilmTools.

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

yeah.. dvexpo was pretty small too. I dont know if its just because Im used to nab where it takes a good 3 days to go see everyone, but dvexpo was a morning and your done expo.

Let me know how the window mount treats you, take some pics if you can. I just finished building my own and to be honest it was completely inspired by the filmtools rig.

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

What's new about it..the "a" designation? It's been on my want list for quite some time now. 14dB self noise, It basically specs out like my AT4033 mics, and they're great.

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

They told me this was premired at the NAM show last week. Filmtools had some great stuff. did you get the Bogen window mount or one of theres?
Jarred this Expo made the DV Expo look huge. I feel sorry for a guy I meet, he drove 6 hours with a wife and baby in tow. It really was a waist of time except for this mic I was really impressed with it . So does anyone have an opinion on this mic. Or AT in general. 8)

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

How does it compare to the Sennheissers ME66 or the 416? Is a better question. :-/

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

Well, I thought I kinda sorta answered it. The AT4073a has been lauded by many for quite some time. It's not new. It specs like my AT4033 mics, and they are great mics.

The Sennheiser is a favorite of many, but some say they blow out at high SPLs. I wouldn't know.

AT is an excellent company and has been around for a long time. I also use their wireless lav, ATW-U101x, which is excellent. My stereo mic is an AT-822, and it is nice too, though the self-noise level is 24dB, it performs very well.

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

Thanks Scott 8) I'm new to sound so I'm just learning about mics. I have a Sennheisser wireless 500 that is great. Thanks again 8)

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

It was the AT897 that is new. My mistake, any coments on this compared to the ME66? :-[

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

Now that's a whole different ballgame. I was looking at those, and cannot find a price for them. They are probably more expensive than you want, maybe not.

This mike can change pickup to a pattern giving you a very narrow elliptical pick up or you can set it to a very tight shotgun. It would (my guess) be very problematic for general use. The brochure makes it look like external boxes and controls are necessary, and you might not want to cope with these regularly.

Providing that you have a need for strong off axis rejection, you might actually love this mic.

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

I see now that the AT895 lists for $2,595. And now that I'm lost in alphabet soup, I realize that you referred to the AT897. That certainly looks to be a very good mic for the money, any money actually.

Bear in mind though that the AT4073a is a louder mic by about 17dB. It's open circuit sensitivity at 1PA is -23dB and the AT 897's is -40dB at 1PA. That in mind, I prefer the AT4073a.

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

Yeah I thought for $299.00 was a great price. And the sound man who was showing me it really was impressed with it. I know it is not a great idea, but if you had to pick one for an on camera mic? Or is the At4073a the cats meow? He had that for $550.00 8)

Re: AT4073a. New Mic

Let's tackle this a little differently. Suppose you have both mics in the same spot listening to a 95dBSPL signal. The AT4073a would generate a -23dBv signal, or .071 volts. The AT897 would generate a -40dBv signal, or .010 volts.

This means that the current sent from the AT4073a is SEVEN times as great as that from the AT897. That is good. That definitely puts the AT4073a in Cat's Meow land, at least IMHO.

That's not to say that the AT897 is not a decent mic for the money.
