AT4073

Hi. I sometimes see "AT4073" and sometimes "AT4073a". Are these the same mics or different?

Also I read on another forum that this mic is actually "hotter" than the ME66. However I have been told on this forum that this ME66 is too hot and the 4073 would be better fpr my DVX100.

Confused!

Help appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: AT4073

Either one will work.

I just messed around with the Sanken CS3e, and I liked it very much. I would go with that one.

Re: AT4073

The CS3 is a sweet mic... but the best price is between $1110 and $1200 for that. If you can swing it then I guarantee you'll love it. I think that's good advice.

When it comes to the me66 I think that too many people bought them and just proclaimed them great without knowing any better. I did that years ago. I'm telling you, if you compare an me66 to a 4073 in ANY way... you'll realize that the 4073 is a far superior mic.

When the me66 was $350 a few years ago and the 4073 was close to $600... the 4073 was still the best choice. Now the me66 has gone up to $450 and the 4073 has gone DOWN to $530.

That's why I always tell people that the At4073a is THE BEST "bang for the buck" mic.

I sold my me66 last year before I got into really testing all these mics... I've got a friend coming over tonight that still has an me66 and I'm going to get some clips of several mics and I'll post the results. That will instantly end all arguments and remove all doubt.

you dont have to , you have my word on that :-)

Re: AT4073

I would agree that the between the 4073 and the me66, the 4073 would be the way to go.

Re: AT4073

I use a AT4073a and like it a lot. It was a stretch for my budget at the time but I'm glad waited until I could afford it.

I don't know if it's hotter than a ME66 but I do have to be careful in high SPL environments like live music. With the DVX on the -50db mic setting, I had distortion that could not be controled by the level controls or the limiter. I assume that means the mic was overdriving the mic pres. I now carry a 10db pad for those situations.
