At4073?

My friend "the sound guy" (last one to arrive, first one to leave) doesn't like my AT4073. He says it's a "piece of crap". Am I to believe this rubbish?

As compared to what? Crap is all relative. In comparison to all of the shotguns/cardioids on the market, the 4073a is a decent mic for the money.

does your friend like his mics he want to rent you?
next time tell him that its your mic or his job - you will see wonders

I own one and did all the sound for my lovefest entry with it. I was happy with the results. You can be the judge in a couple of weeks. But, for a first time out of the gates, I think any issues won't be with the mic :)

Sound folks are one of the most opinionated groups I know (did I just demonstrate my point?). However if he's the last to arrive and the first to leave.... Maybe he's just a prick. With a few notable exceptions "piece of crap" usually translates "it's not what I'm used to working with" or "my xxx is bigger than yours". If he has something better he want's to bring in and use (at no charge to you) give him a chance. But if he's just mouthing off remind him that he's working for you.

I think you could search both DVXuser and the entire internet and not find that
mic called a piece of crap anywhere. In fact, I just Googled the two words and
this post came up, followed by other posts about the great AT4073 and other
mics being crap. I've considered buying that mic many times based on the number
of positive comments about it on this and other forums. Which means your friend
"Don't know crap".

It is the best you are going to do for under $1100 (shotgun, new, in the U.S.) and a good step up from the rode mics. Totally acceptable.

I've been using this mic for the last year and a half.
We are finishing a doc with over 200 hours of footage recorded run and gun on a HVX 720 24pn. For almost 60% of the time this was the mic on it.
My post sound guy (Jim Lebrecht check his professional credentials on IMdB) has nothing but god words about our audio capturing.
Again, this is all relative, and in a different situation we might have used a different mic. But for this project and my money the AT4073 rocked!
