Do the guys doing sound design and musical score get the film "scene by scene" or do they wait until they have a full rough cut of the entire film before they start?
In the low/no/micro budget indie world - meaning projects under $100k - the audio post folks usually get it after the visual editing is done, although color correction and misc. CGI is probably still ongoing.
You get the completed score right before you mix, but hopefully you have had contact with the composer during the post process.
Now while this is the way it is done it doesn't mean it's the best way to do it. In an ideal workflow everyone is in early and talks regularly. The sooner everyone is on board and sharing the more efficient you can be.
But usually on a med big budget film (seven to nine digits) the music is not heard till the final mix. The sound designer was on from the start of post sound and maybe sooner, sometimes a LOT sooner. With most Mini-Inde's and below the music comes in with the picture edit, though sometimes the same as a big film (no real rule), and "sound design" is the same person doing everything else in the sound post.
I have edited a few very low budget fictional narrative features and we have added the musical score only after we have the "Lock Picture" cut done. That does not mean that the score is not being worked on, but that it was not formally timed, and recorded, until after lock picture.
I was just out in your lovely city. Really enjoyed it. It was a BIG surprise, you get a lot of bad press. My wife is hot to move there, but work is always an issue. But if the income aspect works out we may well be heading your way in the next year or so. I'm wearing my EASTERN MARKET cap as I type.
