At ProCon, "Cancelled" means "Send Anyway"

When I was thrashing about in the early part of the year looking for a larger-storage solution for my HVX, I read here about how there were several options, including a laptop (bulky), P2 Store (expensive), Cineporter (not out yet), FS (not out yet) and Citidisk HD (not out yet).

In February, I started talking with a Vin Bruno of ProCon Digital Systems about ordering one of these things. It sounded pretty cool.

On March 1st of this year, I plunked down my credit card with him to "reserve" one. I was told it was just around the corner.

On March 21st, I was mailed by Vin Bruno again, being told it was "almost ready" and I could expect it to be shipped out on the 30th.

On JUNE 25th, I mailed Vin Bruno at ProCon and said:

"Hi there. You guys never got back to me, and in the meantime I bought
the Panasonic P2 Store thingy. Thanks for being so helpful in the
beginning, there! I hope things eventually work out for you, but I
don't need the thing at the moment."

I had gone with the P2 Store (expensive) in the three months since I last heard anything from ProCon. I kept shooting my films (still am!) from then on.

Today, August 18th, a Citidisk HD showed up at my door.

This, I assume, means several things.

First, it means that I was charged for this thing, either $1200 or less depending on what model I was shipped (I have not opened it). This is money I didn't want to spend, having already dropped $2200 or whatever for my P2 cards and P2 store. I've been using them, I'm fine with them for the moment.

Second, apparently being five months late with no updates on a $1200 piece of equipment is acceptable to ProCon. I don't agree with that opinion.

Third, apparently shipping a five-month-backordered piece of equipment with absolutely no updates at all during this five months and sending it out with no notification this was being done is also acceptable to ProCon. Again, I do not agree.

ProCon's letter indicated a 30 day moneyback guarantee. Considering their track record with what goes into their letters, I see pain ahead. I'm writing this here in case people were roped into ordering this item and might have moved/changed addresses/changed lives since they made their pre-orders... your stuff is coming, and your credit cards are likely charged.

For my own bit, I am already reading about negative aspects of this item (firmware upgrades needed to work, bad track records with Citidisk) and I don't want it at all. I'm considering a Cineporter but only after it's been out a while; for the moment I'm happy with my environment and what I did buy.

Heads up!

Before you get too upset, I'd check with your credit card company to see if they charged your card. It could have been a simple shipping mistake, and they sent you a unit instead of the guy next to you on the waiting list.

Regardless, I would hope they would refund your money, as well as the return shipping costs.

I nearly bought the Citidisk when it started shipping, but when I discovered that it will currently only record to .mov files (which aren't any use to me), and not the MXF files they advertise, I immediately thought better. Even if that feature is coming as a firmware update, I think I'll wait until they have all the bugs worked out before ordering...

Jason,
Please keep us informed with regards to this saga. I am considering the Citidisk Hd , now that the cineporter release has been pushed back. i would most likely order from Pro Con. Sooooo I am very interested in how they treat you.

Jason,

I apologize for the lack of updates during the long backorder period that we all experienced in getting the CitiDISK shipping. As far as the missed cancellation goes I apologize for that as well. We stand by our 30-day money back guarantee 1000%. If you dont want to keep the CitiDISK give me a call and I'll arrange for the return. My direct number is 201-814-0405 x1043.

Thanks,
Richard Kurtzer
