been using my AT 897 at some live music events with good results. one of the problems i notice is that i have to keep my CH1 volume control at 1-2 to avoid clipping the audio. then i have to raise the volume in post.

is this normal behavior for the at897 or am i standing too close ?

check this clip out and tell me what you think about the audio. this was an unpaid event so i shot it in SD....LOL
 
Try a pad (attenuator). They come in increments like 10 or 20db. That will allow you to raise the camera recording level in a loud environment. A mixer would be better yet.
