AT 875. Is it 875 or 875R?

I've seen the 875r reviewed by a member here. Reportedly a good inexpensive on camera mic.

But I can't for the life of me find 875r. B&H and other vendors list it just as an 875. But it has the "r" in the model name on the AT website. Specs look the same.

Any reason to be suspicious or are they the same mic? I don't want to inadvertently get an outdated model.

If anyone has comments on the mic itself, I'd love to hear them. Do to it's low price, it's not an item my local audio pro shop sells or rents, so I'll be buying blind, or deaf as the case may be. Planning to mount it on EX-1 and boom as necessary.

Thank you

Answered my own question sort of. B&H abbreviates the model #. The 875 is the 875R.

My bad.

Would still like to hear from anyone who's used this mic? Are you happy? Would you buy it again?

AT875R, great mic for the price. Best used on camera, good as a boom or for V.O. This is the mic to buy if you are on tight budget

This mic impressed the heck out of me, so much so that I use it all of the time now when I travel or when I need a camera mounted mic for movie premiers.

You can hear the samples I recorded with it in this article and my full writeup and comparison of the 875r with more expensive mics. Oktava MK-012 sounds better but it much more susceptible to handling noise and microphonics, rendering it useless as an on-camera mic. What is nice about the 875r is that it is cheap and sounds better than many mics in the $500.00 range IMHO. I like it better than the Sennheiser ME-66 or the Audio Technica 4073a and it costs 1/3 of the cost of either.

Thanks Dan. I read your article and, based on it, went ahead and ordered it this morning. I want something inconspicuous that will also perform well and this seems to fit the bill.

The ME 66! My video shop loves it but the audio shop thinks it's the pits and prefers the higher-end tools. Unfortunately, when you're not shooting professionally it's hard to justify a $1500 mic.

Thanks again
Bob

Good luck with it. I find it to be pretty impressive. I own the MKH60, which is obviously better but for those situations where I don't want to fly with an expensive mic or weight and size are a big deal, the 875r is a great, dirt cheap alternative that can sound pretty decent.
