Aspiring editor needs advice

Hey Guys, I am new to dvxuser, but I hope that you guys can help. I am 18 years old and currently attending a local community college. I have a good full-time job and I don't want to leave it, because I am making good money. I want to become an editor, maybe for television or maybe for movies. What should I do to reach my goals?

I'd get a job in the post production industry, where you'll make a lot of contacts and have access to equipment and programs, and cut in your spare time until someone recognizes your talent and gives you work.

Post houses sometimes need people to dub + label. Maybe do that PT and get some time on their systems and take tutorials or something.

Look on job sites like craigslist and mandy.com for people seeking editors or assistant editors for their low/no budget shorts or features.

I agree with salils, check out craigslist in particular, that is where people without money post. With little money to spend, they shouldn't have too high of expectations. In the mean time, get a program that suits you. FCP is one of the big 3 to learn, especially if you are an Apple type of person, Motion and Shake are also highly sought skills. Shoot whatever you can, and cut away. Sometimes you can even con a Band into paying you a bit of change to shoot their performance. Experience is experience.
