Aspect ratios for docs

What aspect ratios do you guys use for documentaries and for what reasons?

I'm about to start shooting and I'm thinking about how to frame my shots (16:9 or 2.35:1). The doc will be premiered on a movie theater screen and will be submitted to festivals, but then its distribution will be online.

Are there specific reasons why someone would choose 2.35:1 over 16:9, such as more use of negative space, or 16:9 to be able to capture more of the scene without backing up for the shot?

To be honest, the vast majority of the people who will end up seeing your doc will see it in a home theater/online viewing environment. That's why you should always go 16:9.

Sadly, most of the HD channels are cropping 2.4 down to 1.77 (16x9). I have been seeing this a LOT lately with feature films of any kind.

So, unless your doc requires a wider format (ie shooting wildlife on a wide plain, etc) I would go with 16x9.

Optionally you can frame for 2.4 while recording 1.77 (16x9). (or even the opposite if shooting film). in order to give you options.
