On commercials you see the black bar on the top and bottom with text, how can I get the bars on the top and bottom with out it cutting into my footage, I just want it to squeeze the footage into another aspect ratio.

Ok- can you please give us a lot more detail than just "720p" like camera used, codec, sequence settings, etc. This is not a police interrogation- we're trying to help you. Pretend like we can't see your computer from where we're sitting.

Ok and to what delivery format? (Still waiting for proper details. If you can't be bothered to type a couple of sentences of details you're not going to get much help...)

Sure Noah. I started with footage from an HVX200 digitized into DVCPROHD in a 720p HD 23.98 timeline. What I'd really like to have is an NTSC 24p final video in H.264. What I want to know is- can I make that into something with black bars on top and bottom?
Of course that's no problem. Take the 720p sequence you've editing and drop it into a new NTSC 720x480 4:3 sequence (make sure the anamorphic box is not checked). That will automatically rescale the 720p DVCPROHD footage into a letterboxed scaled down version in an NTSC 4:3 frame. From there you can use FCP Text generators and put them into the letter box areas. Then when you're done, use File>Export QuickTime Conversion> and pick H.264 as your export codec.
Noah, what I'd like to do is keep the footage at 720p but have letterboxing above and below the frame that I could put titles into. Is that possible?
I wouldn't recommend doing this for broadcast but for web it would be ok. Basically you'd just increase the vertical size of the sequence a bit to make an area appear beyond the frame boundary. Your 720p footage is essentially 1280x720 (well technically 960x720) but that's another story. So increase the vertical resolution say to 1280x1000. That would give you some extra black areas at the top and bottom of the frame. Then you could drop in FCP text generator titles to fill those black areas. When you're done, export to QuickTime Conversion with the H.264 codec.
For broadcast 720p you're kinda out of luck because it has to stay 1280x720 in order to be a proper broadcast signal. So you'd either scale the clips down say 80% which would give you black bars at the top and bottom but unfortunately also at the sides- which looks weird. Or you could add a widescreen filter which would crop the shots off at the top and bottom, essentially covering up parts of your frame. A third option would be to scale and then use the aspect ratio slider in the motion tab to widen the footage out to fill the sides again. But this will look really weird. In short- do this only if it's a QuickTime for your desktop/web.
You're kidding right??? Please read my lengthy post and change 720 for 1080.... And do not post another single sentence question in this thread or it will be closed. You want help- ask like a human being. Good night.
