I've used VEGAS with a DVX100A on quite a few projects, and I'm running into a problem that I think I know is not fixable, but I'll give it a shot...
A friend of mine just shot his first low-budget film. He's asked me to edit it. I'm VERY familiar with VEGAS but this issue has totally stumped me. Apparently, his DP didn't know what he was doing and he filmed about half the film in the SQUEEZE mode in the DVX100A and the other half in normal 4:3 pulldown. You gurus out there are probably saying, "Dude, you're screwed!" This is about what I'm prepared to tell this friend of mine.
As you can imagine, if I force 1.2121 clips into the 0.9091 aspect ratio there's distortion of the image and the same goes vice versa. From what I know about cinematography, it's my understanding that the original image is what dictates what you can do with the pixel aspect ratio.
If anyone knows how I can make this film have visual consistency, I'd really appreciate it. I boxed in the the images, so at least there's no alternation between a wide field of view and the 4:3 view (of course, he's losing some images. The main problem I'm having, naturally, is that some of these clips are going to be distorted.
Since I can only render the file in one format (e.g., widescreen or not) the images will be distorted regardless of whether or not I can make them look consistent in the VEGAS editor.
Am I screwed?
