Aspect Ratio Comparisons

Here is a simple comparison for those who like to shoot and/or present their videos in a more “cinematic” format. It includes the aspect ratio, the name, and the height to width dimensions in pixels, in case you want to add any of them to your crop presets or create a mask.

Sorry! I found a typo in the Todd-AO example and the corrected version is being uploaded. Will provide the correct link shortly

Jay that was very nice.

You might want to add the common 1.166:1 that was hugely popular for so long. Also you might want to add "digital anamorphic" at 2:40:1 (1920x800) since we see that shape a LOT now that movies are being shot on 1080p cameras.

Also, though we know 1:33 now as SD, that was once the academy ratio before TV. Academy at 1.85:1 is a fairly new phenomenon comparitively.

I agree with Perrone Ford, but will go further and mention that 2.40 (2.39) is not just digital anamorphic... it's actually been the American standard for anamorphic presentation for about four decades.

It definitely deserves a place on that list, if not for history than at least for future, because it is and will be the widest 'standard' aspect ratio in the USA.

thats cool but its not really visually correct, as your field of view would be different depending on what lenses you used and how it was streched ect. Am I right? I don't normally shoot film.

I too was surprised that 1:2.39 was missing.
crop of 1080p is 1920 x 803 pixels

my last film A Strange Confession is this crop, stills here LINK
