ASIO Problems

If i minimize Premiere Pro 2 and maximize it again i get an ASIO driver error. Then i cant play ANY footage....in the preview window or the output window. I looked at the Audio properties and there is nothing set for the audio output. Plus if i click the ASIO properties button...nothing happens. Sometimes it happens when i start the program, and sometimes it doesnt happen at all.

I have Premiere Pro 2 on a 3ghz P4, 4gb ram and a contour shuttle pro USB, no virii, everything updated....

Reload Premiere Pro???

Thx

I think I would suspect the ASIO driver first. Check to make sure it's up to date. I use a Presonus Firebox on my editing workstation and it's ASIO driver works well even when switching between Premiere Pro and Audition. If your audio device has both ASIO and WDM drivers, you might try switching between the ASIO and the 'Premiere Pro Windows Sound' choices to see if one works better than the other.

This is a wierd senario tho...i cut a small clip last night and posted it on another post here. When i started PP it didnt have the driver error...funny might just be the other project that is screwing it up...plus this project had 1 track of sound and the other has about 6 tracks.

I was suspecting the ASIO driver, but where is it located? Does anyone have a link for an updated driver download?? Thx in advance,

Bayne

ASIO drivers are specific to the audio device they are written for and are provided by its maker. So you need to check with them. Just out of curiosity, what is the device you're using?

Audio is out the sound card built into the motherboard, AC97 i think....im at work right now i cant check for sure.

RRRGGGG F'ing Dammit!!!! Reloaded PP2 and then the ASIO drivers died after using it for an hour.....

Sorry to hear things aren't working for you. Have you checked for driver updates from the motherboard maker? Have you tried selecting the 'Premiere Pro Windows Sound' option for the 'Audio Hardware' preference? IMO, if you're using the built-in audio, I don't see any advantage to using an ASIO driver. The 'Windows Sound' option should be using the WDM DirectSound driver.

The only option I have is the Premiere Pro Windows sound. Then if I click the ASIO properties nothing happens. If the PP windows sound is selected i cannot playback at all.

So far i have uninstalled the drivers for the sound card, uninstalled PP2, and reinstalled both....and im still having the same problems. I have also killed any nonessential process in the task manager....so the only thing i can guess to do would be to buy a new sound card....

Ok, I wondered if that might be the case. As far as i understand it, you are not really using an ASIO driver. The Premiere Pro is misleading in that it seems to lump all the audio I/O under the ASIO tag. Unless I misunderstand, ASIO drivers are special low-latency drivers that are written to a standard developed by Steinberg for running high-performance audio applications in a Windows environment.

If your only option is the 'windows sound' option, then you are using a WDM DirectSound driver which would normally be just fine for basic video editing. It would be the same driver that other common audio applications would be using such as WMP. Once the sound stops working in Premiere, do other sound applications stop working as well? Or is it just Premiere?

Again, I suggest that you check with the maker of your motherboard for any audio driver updates. If you don't know the exact maker, you should be able to determine who the chipset maker like VIA, for example. They typically have generic drivers you can download. Watch the initial screens when you first boot your system or use the Windows Device Manager to determine who it is.

I don't know what you might have for a budget but getting some different audio hardware would be your next choice. I favor the external USB or Firewire connected audio boxes. I like their versatility as you can go from desktop to a laptop for field recording. They typically have better features and electronics than a budget sound card and commonly come bundled with entry-level versions of Cubase, Protools, etc. But they start at around $200-300. It depends on how serious you want to get with your audio.

Good luck,
Dan

When the sound stops in PP2 the rest of the sound on the machine work fine. So its just premiere....I have DL'd the latest drivers. I built the machine with a Abit NI8 SLI GR mobo that has the NVidia chipset and a P4 630 chip. And everything has worked for months now....

Does it matter how many tracks of audio I am running? I think this proj has about 5 tracks right now. I dont have the money for a nice external box, but i think a $50 5.1 soundblaster card might help...no??

WTF!!!! New sound blaster card, reloaded PP2....still same error. Killed any process that didnt have anything to do with PP2....still same crap.

Any help?

I would be surprised if it was th MB. Abit is usually pretty solid. Try checking their forum, and if it is still around, there was a site called Sudhaim (?), and he knew all the in's, out's, and hacks for Abit.

I built a Dual Chip Opteron at work that holds up to 8gb of ram. 6 ram slots.

I fixed my problem tho....finally. RELOADED MY MACHINE>......PITA...

for what its worth....

I hear that a firewire card (1394) that contains anything "other than" a TI (texas instrument) chip, can cause problems with ASIO drivers. I have had some weird audio problems and will replace my firewire card (VIA chip) with a TI chipped card soon.
