ASC Videos from ICSC 2011 - New Generation of Cinematographers

Interesting. I do disagree with the doom-and-gloom attitude towards the disappearance of film from educational settings. While film certainly forces a DP to perform some educational tasks that digital makes unnecessary, there's no reason a DP can't simply perform those tasks on digital anyway. It just requires more self-discipline than film does. This will undoubtedly weed out many sub-par DP's, but a great DP will be a great DP no matter what tool he/she learns on.

In the next video, I heartily agreed with the first guy who said using bigger screens than computer monitors / web windows is essential to learning the visual art of film. I've seen this myself in that films I have made for bigger screens are received very differently when they're viewed on small screens. The composition and lighting are less important on a smaller screen and people just look at the general shapes.
