ASC DPs and Forums

Hi,

I am looking for more ASC dps (or any highly established and well-known DPs) that are regularly active on forums.

Both David Mullen and Roger Deakins provide invaluable information and their posts are truly a gift to cinematographers both student and professional. Deakins' forum can be found on deakinsonline.com and David Mullen has an ongoing thread at reduser.net where people can ask him questions on lighting and cinematography.

Are there any other DPs like them (for example along the lines of Harris Savides, Lance Acord, Greg Fraser, Cronenweth, Zsigmond, etc) that post regularly on forums? I feel it was almost sheer luck to have found deakinsonline.com and since then I have been learning so much from those forums.

I hope my mention of "high established" and "well-known" doesn't offend anybody on this forum. Everybody who contributes to this site has proven themselves to be helpful, unselfish, and humble in every regard. Some of the information that you provide has been wholly indispensible and the work that you all produce amaze me every day.

The only other ASC that I know of who regularly and actively communicates on his own blog is Shane Hurlbut at HurlbutVisuals. You might find a few more on CML, but I haven't looked.

There are two ASC members near me and both are extremely pleasant, open and sharing. They love to teach and answer questions, even a slacker gaffer like me. When there's a shoot anywhere around here I get to wander around the set and spend as much time around the camera as I like. One of them DPd our little 48 Hr Film Festival shoot. Great fun.

Try that yourself.

I try to go to as many ASC events as possible here in LA, as well as attend any panels that might be going on. I never had a chance to visit sets and hang out with the greats though!

Here's my best piece of advice for life: If you don't ask you don't get.

So hit them up.

And be prepared to name some of your favorite cinematographers/DPs (cameramen if they're old guys) living and dead, their ouvre and why. They might give you a little seriousness test. I said Conrad Hall, Nestor Almendros and Roger Deakins; that worked. Oh, and I also got asked about my favorite artists. (Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Sargent.) Then I was in.

My Reflections came today and just skimming it it's great. Your recommendation is the reason I spent my, what, 80 bucks? :)
