Hi folks. If you guys could help me brainstorm this, that would be great. I need some ideas on how to create angel wings. I need them to unfold as well, complete with feathers et al. They will need to be life size, like maybe a ten foot span from tip to tip, or so. Thoughts?
But an idea for light weight wings...Wooden dowel rods connected with low tension toggle bolts, the toggle bolt will let the wing open like a bat's wings, then use a cut white sheet for background and feathers on top to give texture...
How about the lightweight rods used for tents (like a dome tent)? The way the wings would move/bounce might look more realistic...you would have to attach them at the base in a tight "V" shape, so the weight of the feathers won't tip them too much.
I recall something on the Dogma commentary about what a friggin nightmare the angel wings where on that. I can't remember if there were any tips. But good luck man. You've chosen a tough one there.
I loved the wings in Dogma, my only problem with them was that when they unfolded, they were so heavy that it made the person sort of "wiggle" once they expanded. An angel would have more control over them. Just a thought.
Before someone mentioned it here, I was thinking about that Dogma clip and about how it was hard to keep steady...
If you know you only need the shot from one angle...The wings can be made much sturdier by creating a stand, that will hold the wings independantly of the actor.
If you need more than one shot, just shoot so the stand is out of frame...
ah- good point. Actually there's two shots, one ecu of the wing tearing from the back of an angel, with cartilage, tendons and such. The other is just a shot of the shadows of the wings as they span out, over his 'victim'. So, to your point, the stand may work there. We're not after any wide shots of the wings, in fact they're simply implied.
if thats the case. for your shadow shot. just cut some cardboard out that is the right shape and size. cut it into however many sections an angel wing has...3 i think..and give it some sort of hing thingy connecting each section, and letting each one spin. you might be able to hide a couple people off to the side to open the wings...also, you could go out and get some feathers and glue them to the edges of the cardboard, so that the shadow will apear soft. for the close up...that doesnt have to be the whole wing...just a little piece. so you can make that from whatever...use real animal parts from a grocery story if you want. just glue or pin some feathers to it.
Good stuff, Rich. We have a make-up artist there for all the latex and gore, I really wanted to create whole wings, but I guess I could cheat per your suggestion, that may be best. I'm a little confused with 'spin' but I think I know what you mean. There's enough input from all you guys to make it work. Thanks folks, you rock!
For those interested, here's the two scenes:
EXT. DESERT -- DAY
A dust storm blankets the dunes of an arid desert. The white sun cracks through the whipped sand and flying debris.
A small group of shadows form under the storm.
Four figures lie still within feet from each other. Their naked skin is blistered. One is dead, lying on his stomach. His eyes are wide and fill with sand.
Two gaping, oval-shaped wounds fester on each of his shoulder blades.
A finger twitches a few inches away.
TILLIAN struggles to sit up. His burned flesh cracks as he moves. His mouth falls open in pain. He reaches over and touches his dead companion’s back.
He rubs the blood between his fingers.
He reaches for his own wound on his left shoulder blade. His fingers shift over to his right blade and grasp at a single, blackened wing. It is attached by threads of cartilage and tendon.
Tattered and twisted it begins to tear from his back. He screams.
Feathers are swept away with the spiteful storm. It separates from his back and blood pours from the wound. His face slams into the burning sand.
He fights the wind and crawls to one of the others. He places his head onto his chest. He shakes him. His companion coughs, winces, and falls back into darkness.
Tillian wipes the blood from his face.
He peers through the storm and recognizes the fourth body, a female. His face turns pale. He yells into the thundering storm. He rushes to her side and pulls her into his arms. Blood pours down his arms from her wounds.
He falls to his knees and kisses her forehead. Her eyes glaze open.
She brushes her hand across his face.
The blanket of sand sweeps through miles of the desert, and yields to a small, isolated home in the middle of nowhere.

Jameson scrambles for his pistol a few yards in front of him. He grabs it and turns to face Nathaniel.
Nathaniel’s trench coat rests at his feet.
Two shadows span from Nathaniel’s shoulders, move up the sand and cast over Jameson.
Jameson is stunned. The gun slips from his hand.
Nathaniel’s voice bursts through the wind.
