Artist being sued for (allegedly) his own work

Sheesh where can I donate to help him fight it? Really. I totally would if there was a third party who could validate his story.

What a huge load of crap. I'm glad he's the kind of person to keep pushing; a lot of people that get hit by the big guys roll over once they start with those kinds of tactics. Most people just aren't in a position to be able to deal with that, so don't. I really hope this works out well and, more importantly, gets a lot of publicity. Hopefully in his local papers as a heads up to clients.

I reckon he has a solid case for defimation of character. I'd help him in whatever small way I can via donation. It's never about the money with me it's about principals and his story really does suck. I wish him well.

I can't read the article, it is either down, or just being slammed. Is it Getty Art that is doing the theft? That is owned by Microsoft, and has been known to openly steal stuff off the internet, then copyrighting it.

No. It's another stock art site.

The problem with the clients being contacted could easily be seen as slander. If he can prove he's lost work from it then he's got a HUGE case against them.

As far as the theft of images, it can be easily proven by the date stamps on when the images were uploaded to the stock art website. If they were after the date the clients received the logos from the artist then there's NO WAY he stole the images from the stock art website. But the lawyers are not providing the date stamps because then they will lose their advantage.

I'm "assuming" the artist is telling the truth because he is the one who decided to make it public. Either way, I don't think it will ever make it to court.

this story comes to mind...

is surely in no way related, is an interesting read nevertheless since it deals with design and template selling websites used to turn those millions of creditcardnumbers into cash...

I hope he finds some expert help! this looks like a bad dream indeed!

yeah. if his claims are indeed true, then (my opinion... no lawyer here) is that he should do everything he can to bring as much public attention to this issue as possible... Then maybe a decent lawyer will take up his case in exchange for the publicity/free advertising.

If the claims are true, it's pretty shameful what is being done, and would appear that he would not only be entitled to a substantial countersuit, but that the company(s)/law firms on the other side may be looking at some fairly substantial criminal charges.

Again, just my opinion.... and I make no judgement as to the truth one way or another. But, the tactics being allegedly used by the "plaintiff's" and/or their lawyers certainly seem shady at best.

Trying to keep an open mind about this whole thing but, after viewing those reddit image links, my spider senses are starting to tingle.

Logo artists are like filmmakers. The good ones have their own unique style. What I saw, when looking at those logos, were two artists that have a unique style and one who has no style of his own. Unfortunately, our protagonist in this story, is the one without a style of his own. Which does not bode well for his story. I'm starting to think he's not telling the whole truth.

Curious to see how this ends.

there is a lot of weirdness on all sides here..

This "get out your pitch fork" mentality that stockart seems to encourage in their anonymous reporting of alleged copyright violations, etc..

The similarity in images of engle's work to more than one artist on stockart.

The fact that the law firm representing stockart uses an @aol.com email address?

The allegation that stock art or it's law firm has contacted all of engle's clients to tell them he has stolen artwork... which anyone with any sense would not do.

More than meets the eye from all sides on this... I'm very interested in seeing how things develop.

If what he says is true, he needs a lawyer. He's asking for evidence and they're refusing to provide it; a lawyer will know which motions to file to compel the evidence from them.

Another interesting thing of note is that one of the artists work on the stockart website that they are claiming this Jon fella' stole filed copyrights for his images submitted to that site back in 2001.

Of course, we don't know when Engle claims to have created his images as he hasn't stated, but his posts on logo pond are mostly from 2007 and later it seems.
