Making money usually involves investing money. Even if that means ponying up a few grand for professional copies and packaging. If you do that and use a system like IndieRocket, it's pretty low budget to self distribute. They do exactly what you are talking about.

But some of us still like the idea of engaging the help, experience and contacts of professionals. That's what your money buys you in the service deals mentioned in the articles I posted. It might be cheaper to self distribute (and sometimes that's the best way to go), but if you can get your stuff into Wal-Mart and Blockbuster, the cash up front seems like a good investment.

As if getting a film seen wasn't already hard enough. Nowadays it looks nearly impossible.

Used to be just getting your film made was the biggest obstacle. Now it looks like only half the battle!

i think it's encouraging. there is a big opportunity here to be on the cutting edge of new distribution models. and who else is benefited more than filmmakers working with ultra low budgets?

I agree. It's easy to see the glass half empty because shutterspeed is right; there was a time that if you made a film, that meant something. Now there is a glut of content. Every sword cuts 2 ways and the technology that we have grown to love is also a weapon against us from the sheer volume of people who want to make movies.

But knowing what you are getting into puts you ahead of the game. The world will always need content. Being aware of the market's shifting paradigm enables you to prepare for it and make better decisions.
