Article from Paula Wagner....

So goes real estate, so goes the world.

That's why I work in real estate. ;)

Nah, but this article feels 100% accurate. And hey, maybe this kind of talk from the big wigs will get more indie people (VFX, actors, crew) to come together and work on making something good, rather than hoping for bundles of cash upfront -- something that neither the producer or the director are getting. Kind of a "If the movie succeeds we all succeed" mentality (with the appropriate contracts in play, of course). Though I still believe if you have money for a crew, PAY THEM UPFRONT. You're better off shelling out a couple grand with no strings attached rather than having a gaffer suing you because he disagrees with the bottom line, or to a lesser degree having to pay out twice as much as you want because you had to promise twice as much in "deferred" payment.

Good article, though. It really is time for people to see beyond the typical distribution routes. Almost none of them are going to give you a dime upfront, and anyone who has ever given something to a distributor without getting monies upfront will tell you that they ended up getting pretty much nothing at all.

yea she makes a lot of sense.

i always hear this about small indie films that are pretty much unknown for the most part, but i wonder if that is the case for indie movies that open in the top 10 box office lineup on a particular weekend(s).
