was browsing the net looking for more information on braodcast 4 and found this article by none other than the man, Barry Green. Name not familiar... you know him as Barry_Green. Know who I am talking about now :) Anyways. He doesn't touch on the inner workings of the software, but more the support that it has for various formats. It is dated today. check it out:

p.s. I can't wait for you to get your hands on broadcast 4 either Barry, so you can write an article about the actual use of it and its features.
Thanks for all you do

Jason

I did that article a few months ago, before 4.0 was out. I guess the editorial schedule finally worked out so the magazine could fit it in.

I have been working extensively with Macs recently and I don't care what anyone says, EDIUS's P2 workflow beats the patootie out of the Mac workflow. I'll probably upgrade to EDIUS 4 sometime soon and then hopefully it'll be a more direct competitor as an editing app. But for HVX/P2 integration nothing else comes close.

at first, it was kinda weird to me. But as my feeble mind is wrapping itself around it, I am really starting to dig it, the more I figure out what works for me. Multicam is awesome. I am figuring out other uses for it as well, like using it to get a quick rough cut, even from just one cam. Anyways, I hope when you do get to check it out, that you will post some sort of review for us to check out. I believe there is now a 4.01 and a 4.02 version. 4.02 has apparently caused some problems though. Canopus forum says they are working on it though.
Thanks, take care

I'm in the market to purchase my first full fledged NLE software. Edius 4 is catching my eye as well as Vegas and PPro 2.0. My main concern with the Edius project is the lack of "extended" applications that are necessary to complete the workflow process.

This includes a DVD applet, an After-Effects like program, and some type of advanced Audio Editor. I'm having the darndest of time on the Canopus site trying to determine what 3rd party programs work well with Edius 4.0 for these functions. Anybody have any thoughts or opinions on this?

Most of the 3rd party programs don't work with Edius 4 because, as far as I understand, it was a pretty big rework from the prior version, so the other programs are having to be reworked as well to be compatible with the new version.

If you are wanting to edit hvx footage, dvcpro 50 or beyond, as Barry says Edius (Broadcast) is THE program as far as workflow and real-time capabilities are concerned. Yeah, it doesn't have some of the bells and whistles as other apps, but to be honest, the more I am screwing around with the trial version, the less I am missing Vegas, and the more I am enjoying editing with Edius.

However, if you are going to be editing hdv, or mini dv or something like that, you may just want to go with Vegas. It is a real nice program, easy to use from the get-go for basic editing out of the box, and has some pretty nice extras, and the best control over your sound (as far as I can tell) of pretty much any other NLE out there. Just my opinion. Titles suck though, and personally I haven't found much use for any of the transitions in Vegas or Edius other than dissolve/crossfade type transitions.
If you need the compatibility for the type of footage you want to edit, Edius Broadcast seems to be the only genuine, out of the box, option. If you want something that is relatively easy to work with and has pretty decent versatility, I still personally think Vegas is the way to go.

You can burn your project to DVD with Edius Broadcast--It is an option through the Procoder.

Broadcast comes with a sound editing (third party) application called "Sound Soap" although I doubt anyone is using it.

Let's face it, After Effects, however necessary, is not integrated into the current version of Broadcast but it's not integrated into anything else either (other than Adobe branded products). No reason not to edit your footage in Broadcast, take whatever clip you want to do your magic with into AE as an exported uncompressed file then back in to your project when your done (again uncompressed). Not any goofier than some of the hoops you jump through just getting your footage into some of the other NLE's in the first place.

Regarding HDV (or any other format for that matter). Broadcast is virtually blind to issues in that regard--what I mean is, not only can you edit HDV, DV, yadda yadda with Broadcast, you can combine them on the same timeline with your HVX footage as well. Cool, huh?

When you burn your project to DVD thru Procoder - do you have any Authoring capability? or is it a direct burn?

I believe (don't quote me) you are setting up for a direct burn. It adds in chapters for you, but other than that.... You are direct burning. You don't get to make menus or anything. I haven't tried it, but some folks over on the canopus forum were saying it has a lot more compatibility issues with dvd players, but I don't know. Maybe dregenthal can let you know.

The trial version of 3 I used had no provision for menus and I didn't see anything to indicate that version 4 would be any different. Seems like that's a feature that would definitely get press.

Any recommendations? i'm not sure about the Edius/DVCPRO-HD requirements as far as choosing a DVD authoring program, any thoughts?

well it will have to be a standard def mpeg 2 for dvd authoring. Unless of course you just want to put like 3 or 4 minutes on a disc. But with that, any will work just fine. Your dvcpro hd is going to be downconverted anyways. I used dvd architect when I was using Vegas. It worked fine for me. Pretty easy.
